Global Day vs. Pain Media Alert

Our Mission

The Neuropathic Pain Network (NPN) is a coalition of organizations that exists to actively support people with neuropathic pain, by enabling them to better cope with their pain, to obtain the best treatment and, ultimately, to improve
the quality of their lives.

Our Objectives

To raise awareness and educate those organizations who have the ability to impact the treatment (by society and medical management) of people with neuropathic pain.

To help people with neuropathic pain access the most appropriate treatment and provide them the support to improve their lives.

What Is Neuropathic Pain?

Neuropathic pain (NeP) is a type of chronic pain caused by injury or disease of the nervous system that frequently results in a burning, tingling and shock-like sensation.

Nerve pain is often puzzling and frustrating for people with NeP and physicians, as it seems to respond poorly to standard pain therapies. It also can last indefinitely, may escalate over time and can result in disability.

How common is neuropathic pain?

Between 1.5 percent and 7.7 percent of people are believed to be affected by neuropathic pain in the United States and in European countries, respectively. However, it is a syndrome that often is under-diagnosed and under-treated.

In European countries, the estimated prevalence of neuropathic pain is:

  • 3 million people, or 7.5 percent in the United Kingdom
  • 2.5 million people, or 6.4 percent in France
  • 3.5 million people, or 6.0 percent in Germany
  • 2.1 million people, or 7.7 percent in Spain
